- Riva is the protagonist ,because this is her story she is telling and she saved her brothers' life and is taking care of them.

- The Nazi's are the antagonist, because they are the evil people doing horrible things to the Jews.

- It is 1939, in Poland.

Describe the tone and mood of the story? Does it change and what evidence to you have in each?
- The story's mood is almost all the same though out the story. The main character Riva is always scared living in fear to see IF survives though a long dreadful day. She is also always sad. In the book she would say at night time she would let out all her tears she has been holding in all day. The only time she is happy is when it is holiday, and that would be on Hanukkah, and when her child would comfort her. Even when it was Riva's birthday she was devastated.
Describe/explain an internal conflict in the story.
-Riva is trying to understand that there is hope, that the Nazi will surrender and let the Jews free. But no matter how hard she tries it keeps getting worse for her and her brothers.

- Symbolism: "to them we are animals"
This is a symbolic, because it is saying that the Germans are treating them like animals or pets.
- Imagery: "A sharp knocking at the doors wakes us. The pounding at the door gets stronger. A voice, harsh and angry calls " Open up!
This is the Jewish police! Open the door, or we'll break it open!"
